Sofball Scores A Record 17 Runs

PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh softball team recorded a school-record 17 runs in its 17-1 win over Seton Hall, this afternoon. Pitt earns the sweep and improves its Big East record to 3-1, while holding a 17-12 mark on the season. The Pirates fell to 12-16 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

All season the Panthers have held an advantage over its opponents when scoring in the second inning and today was no different. Pitt garnered a school-record 14 runs off 13 hits in the second inning, after trailing 1-0.

With no outs on the board, junior Heather Connor (Reading/Pa./Muhlenburg) was intentionally walked after two batters singled. Stepping to the plate next, senior Jessica Thomas (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) garnered two RBI with a shot a left field. Pitt rallied five more runs before senior Christa Hunter's (Sacramento, Calif,/Harim Johnson West) sacrifice fly ball to centerfield put two outs on the board.

The Panthers didn't stop there though. Connor earned two more and junior Joey Scarf (Humble, Texas/Humble) tallied the last two RBI with a hard shot to center field.

Pitt then added one more member to its bomb squad as sophomore Kelly Stiles (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) recorded her first-career home run with a deep shot over the right field wall with two on in the third.

The Pirates lone run of the game came in the second inning when Jenna Best recorded her second home run of the year.

Hunter (4-1) picked up her second win of the day in the game. Hunter allowed just four hits, while fanning four batters in three innings of work. Junior Laura Belardinelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) pitched two innings, striking out three batters in the fifth and allowing one hit.

Pitt hosts Buffalo in a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 29, starting at 2 p.m.
