PITTSBURGH-Junior Sheena Hellon recorded her third home run of the season, as the Panthers won their home opener against Youngstown State, 4-2, at Trees Field this afternoon. Pitt improved to 13-11 on the season, while the Penguins dropped to 1-7.
Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova) notched the Panthers final run of the game on the scoreboard with a leadoff bomb to left field in the sixth inning. As a team, Pitt has recorded 16 homers this year.
Despite three hits in the fourth inning, Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) scored Pitt's lone run of the fourth inning. Dignon advanced to base after doubling, then, traded places with Hellon after she singled and the Penguins left fielder muffled the ball. Later in the fifth, Dignon tallied two RBI with a single to left field, driving in Francesca DiMaria (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) and Morgan Howard (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny).
The Penguins got on the board first in the fourth inning due to three singles, allowing Becky Hibner to round the bases. Youngstown State, then, scored its second run in the fifth, after an error on a single gave the runner at second an extra base.
Junior Megan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) earned her sixth win of the season, in the circle. Bostick allowed one earned run and seven hits in six innings of work. Senior Christa Hunter (Sacramento Calif./Harim Johnson West) provided relief in the seventh inning and held off the Penguins after runners advanced to second and third with only one out on the board.
