PITTSBURGH--The University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team fell 6-1 to West Virginia, this past Sunday. The Panthers are 5-2 on the season and 2-1 in the Big East.

Sophomore Carlie Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) earned the lone win for Pitt. Playing in the sixth spot, Smith battled back from a 6-2 loss in the first set to win 6-3 and 6-0 in the following games. Smith is currently 14-4 on the season.

Both senior Emily Hughes (Waynesburg, Pa./Canevin Catholic) and junior Annie Davies (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) forced a third set but were outlasted by West Virginia.

The Panthers started the match with three losses in doubles action. Freshman Kristy Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) and sophomore Leah Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) played a close match, but dropped a 9-7 decision to the Mountaineers' Raynie Theis and Stacey Percival.

Pitt travels to Robert Morris for a mid-week match on Wednesday, March 1 at 1 p.m.
