MORGANTOWN, W. Va.--The University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team earned four singles and two doubles win in the first day of the Martha Thorn Invitational.
In Flight A Singles junior Leah Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) defeated Tanya Gombera, 6-1, 6-2, while second-seeded Kristy Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Senior Annie Davies (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) dropped a 6-0, 7-5 (5) match to Virginia's Jaclyn Williamson.
Junior Carlie Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) earned a 6-3, 6-4 win in Flight B singles, while freshman Anna Broverman (Ashbury, W. Va.) played a tough match against Courtney Reed of Virginia, falling 7-6 (4), 6-3. Sophomore Christie D'Achille (Gibsonia, Pa./North Allegheny) also advanced to the next round in the winners bracket after defeating RMU's Katie Skopinski, 6-0, 6-3.
Freshman Anne Piccirillo (Spring City, Pa.) lost a 6-4, 7-6 match to Irena Lane of Youngstown State. Junior Michele Petrasko (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington heights) dropped a 6-2, 6-1 match in the other Flight C singles game.
In Flight A doubles Borza and Friedman fell 8-5 to West Virginia's Lyskawa and Speaker.
Davies and Smith combined in the second round of doubles for a 9-7 win over Youngstown St. Smith and Broverman earned a 8-6 win over a duo from Youngstown St, while Piccirillo and Petrasko fell to the team from Virginia.
Competition in the Martha Thorn Invitational continues through Sunday.
