COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. ? After winning the University National Championship last month in Chicago, Pitt sophomore standout Drew Headlee continued his recent success by finishing second in a pair of tournaments this past weekend at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Headlee (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg) qualified for the University World Trials with his victory in April. This past weekend, Headlee faced Nick Gallick of the Sunkist Kids Club, who attends Iowa State and who was an NCAA All-American, in the finals of the World Trials. Unfortunately for Headlee, he dropped two-of-three matches and finished runner-up in the event.
Headlee also competed in the FILA Junior Freestyle tournament, making his way through the ?mini-tournament? and reaching the finals. After breaking his jaw midway through the first match, he proceeded through six matches to the championship, where he faced Angel Cejudo, FILA Junior Nationals Champion and U.S. Olympic Training Center resident. Cejudo pinned Headlee in the first match (1:58) and won the second bout, 3-0, 1-0.
Additionally, Pitt junior Ronald Tarquinio (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny), who finished fifth at the University National Championships last month, also competed in the Trials. He defeated Penn State?s Jarrad Turner, 6-0, 1-1, 3-1 to advance to the semifinals before falling to Jesse Jantzen, 2-0, 1-0.
