Tennis Opens Season at Martha Thorn Invitational

MORGANTOWN, W.Va ? The Pittsburgh women?s tennis team competed in the Martha Thorn Invitational this past weekend hosted by West Virginia University. The invitational included competition at five singles flights and two double flights as well as a consolation bracket. American, Bucknell, Loyola College, Maryland-Baltimore County, Morgan State, James Madison, Army, George Mason, Dayton, West Liberty, Villanova, and the host Mountaineers competed along with the Panthers.
Hayley Hughes (Waynesburg, PA/Canevin Catholic) advanced to the Flight C finals by defeating Bucknell?s Rebecca Kral, Ashley Reyher of James Madison and Villanova?s Erica Walter. She was defeated by Army?s Alexandra del Moral in the final round.
Also in the Flight C singles bracket, Emily Hughes (Waynesburg, PA/Canevin Catholic) won the consolation final. Hughes dropped her first match to del Moral. She then won her next three matches and completed her run through the consolation Flight C singles by defeating Loyola?s Jessica Liberatore.
In other flights, freshman Annie Davies (Parkersburg, WV/Parkersburg) made her debut as a Panther by defeating Veena Rao in Flight B singles. She was then defeated by Ashley Constantine of the host Mountaineers.
In doubles matches, Davies and Hayley Hughes were defeated in the Flight A semi-finals by Marissa Limsiaco and Melanie Bundoc of Army.
