Tennis Grabs Two Victories This Weekend
2/19/2001
The Pittsburgh tennis team improved its record to 5-2 with wins over St. Bonaventure and Canisius this past weekend.
In the first match of the day Feb. 18 versus St. Bonaventure, senior Dana Jafarian (Bryn Mawr, PA/Harriton) earned her 100th career victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Michelle Kearney at the third-seeded singles spot. Jafarian is just the fourth player in Pittsburgh history to join the prestigious 100-win club. She joins Fran Davis (124 wins), Julie LoPrinzi (116) and Ern Shalbrack (113) who all had at least 100 victories during their careers.
Also capturing singles victories versus the Bonnies were freshman Jill Williams (Media, PA/Upper St. Clair), 6-3, 6-1, in the first-seeded spot, sophomore Brooke Yablonski (Dalton, PA/Lackawanna Trail), 6-3, 6-2, as the number-five seed, and freshman Hayley Hughes (Sycamore, PA/Canevin), who won by default as the number-six seed.
In doubles competition, Pittsburgh captured all three matches. Yablonski combined with Nikki Borza (Beaver Falls, PA/Beaver Area) for an 8-6 win as the first seed, and Williams and Jafarian teamed up for an 8-4 win at the number-two position.
Pittsburgh rounded out the weekend with a 7-0 sweep of Canisius.
The Panthers return to action Feb. 23-24 when they travel to Virginia Tech.
