2001 Pittsburgh Baseball Signings
6/21/2000
2001 Baseball Recruits
Jordano on the recruits: "Jeff, Bryan and Don are exactly the types of players we are attracting and need in our program. We have made great strides in a short time to solidify the foundation of our program. We feel strongly that all three will have a significant impact on our program and assist us in raising the level of our expectations. We also have two verbal commitments that have secured a very talented recruiting class for the 2001 season."
Jeff Barnyak
Pitcher/3B
6-1/205
Phillipsburg, Pa.
Phillipsburg-Osceola H.S.
Jeff Barnyak is projected to be an impact player. His size and his ability to possibly play both pitcher and third base is a great asset. He is dominating on the mound and possesses great skills at the plate. He has a 90+ mph fast ball and has a high ceiling. His size presents a strong physical presence on the mound as well.
Head Coach Joe Jordano on Barnyak: "Jeff was a top priority for us and we very much like his potential at this level. I feel he will be a significant contributor for our club next season. I also look forward to seeing him swing the bat as well. We liked what we saw early and think he may be able to be a dual-guy for us. Jeff is a great kid with a very supportive family. I am pleased that he chose the University of Pittsburgh."
Bryan Spamer
SS
6-1/185
Etters, Pa.
Red Lands H.S.
Bryan Spamer has tremendous potential. He is very athletic, has great hands, a good arm and a very solid bat. Spamer was the Pennsylvania State Keystone Games Most Valuable Player as a junior and is the team's leading scorer in basketball this season.
Jordano on Spamer: "I was very pleased with Bryan signing with us. I liked him when I first saw him in the Keystone Games two years ago. I feel Bryan will excel in our program. I believe he can be a factor in his first season as well. I can't wait to see what he can do over the next few years with some physical maturity."
Don Rhoten
Pitcher
6-4/215
Pittsburgh, Pa.
Central Catholic H.S.
Don Rhoten is a very exciting prospect for the Panthers. This past fall, he has shown significant improvement on his velocity. His size lends to him being a dominant pitcher for the Panthers in the future. He is the second player from Central Catholic High School that Head Coach Joe Jordano has secured in the past two seasons.
Jordano on Rhoten: "I had Don in one of our clinics as a sophomore and really liked his potential. Obviously with his size, I believe with some solid work, Don too will be a factor early. His ceiling is very high. I look forward to working with him."
