Pittsburgh Captures Victories over Youngstown State and Canisius

PITTSBURGH - The Panthers rebounded from an 8-0 loss at Penn State on Wednesday by defeating Youngstown State, 6-3, on Friday and Canisius, 5-0, on Sunday. Pittsburgh has won six of its eight matched to improve its record to 7-6 on the season.
In singles against Youngstown State, top-seeded sophomore Sarah Austin (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) took a hard fought 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 (1-game tie-breaker) decision over Abby Vens and junior Lindsay Carlson (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) beat Marci Russ, 6-2, 6-4, in the second-seeded match. Junior Dana Jafarian (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) beat Jennifer Vodhanel, 6-0, 6-2, and freshman Nikki Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) got a 6-0, 6-1, victory against Leslie Banks in the third and fourth spots, respectively. Christin Glorioso (Fox Chapel, Pa./Fox Chapel) lost a tight match to Anne Marino, 0-6, 6-4, 10-6 (1-game tie-breaker) in the fifth-seeded match and Shanna Young defeated Leah Davis (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton), 6-1, 6-0, in the sixth spot.
In doubles competition, Austin and Carlson defeated Banks and Vens, 8-4, in the first spot while Borza and Jafarian cruised to an 8-3 victory over Russ and Vodhanel in the second-seeded match. In the number three seed match, Glorioso and Davis fell to Alyson Finamore and Marino, 8-4.
Against Canisius, Pittsburgh won the first five singles matches to clinch the win and end the match because of a time constraint due to a delay from inclement weather.
Austin defeated Kara Armstrong, 6-1, 6-0, and Carlson defeated Kim Tasca, 6-0, 6-1, in the first and second spots, respectively. Jafarian beat Audrey Nguyen, 6-1, 6-3, in the third-seed match and Borza took a 6-0, 6-0, decision against Anne Nguyen in the fourth spot. Glorioso finished off the Griffins by edging Kristen Harris, 6-4, 6-4.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, April 2 at 3 p.m. when they compete at neighboring Carnegie Mellon.
