Women's Tennis Sweeps St. Bonaventure

PITTSBURGH - The Panthers defeated St. Bonaventure, 9-0, last week at the Parkway Indoor Tennis facility despite playing without two of their regular starters. Pittsburgh has won four of its last five and have an overall record of 5-5.
In the first seeded singles match, sophomore Sarah Austin (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) edged Johanna Pisola, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(8). The remaining singles matches were not nearly as competitive as junior Lindsay Carlson (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) topped Michelle Kearney, 6-2, 6-1, junior Dana Jafarian (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) beat Sarah Wilcox, 6-2, 6-1, freshman Nikki Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) defeated Andrea Irons, 6-0, 6-2, junior Leah Davis (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) took a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Stephanie Crawford and freshman Jena Fiore (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) beat Jen Ionnone with a score of 6-0, 6-2. Both Davis and Fiore stepped in for the injured Alison Bucher (Lancaster, Pa./Manhiem Twp.) and Christin Glorioso (Fox Chapel, Pa./Fox Chapel).
In doubles, the first seed match was once again competitive but Austin and Carlson held on to defeat Kearney and Wilcox, 9-7. Jafarian and Borza defeated Pisola and Irons, 8-4 in the second spot while Davis and Fiore scored an 8-1 victory over Crawford and Megan Harvison in the third spot.
Pittsburgh will return to action on March 29, when they travel to Penn State. It will mark the first meeting between the two teams since the 1990-91 season.
