PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh gymnastics team earned a school record score of 195.225 as they fell to Michigan State (196.200) on Feb. 19. Senior Danielle "Freddie" Alba (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) set a school record on the balance beam with a 9.975 while helping Pittsburgh to another school record, a team score of 49.100 on beam. (The Panthers' previous team record was 194.35 set last season, while the beam record was 48.725 set in 1998).
Alba, who already held the school's beam record from last season, performed almost flawlessly on the event and earned a perfect 10.00 from one of the two judges. She also earned scores of 9.675 on vault, and season-highs of 9.825 on the uneven bars and 9.725 on floor exercise to place second in the all-around with a 39.200, the fifth-best score in school history.
Senior Pam Lieberman (Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) also competed in the all-around for just the second time in her career and placed third with a 38.950 that included season-high scores on both bars (9.80) and floor (9.75). Fellow senior Lisa Fronhofer (Salem, N.Y./Salem) earned third place on beam (9.800) and floor (9.900) as well as fourth place on vault (9.725). Both her floor and vault scores were personal season bests.
Freshman Nathalie Sulpher (Ottawa, Canada/Franco-Quest) also earned a personal best 9.900 on floor to tie for third with Fronhofer.
The Panthers move to 4-4 overall and will host Western Michigan in a dual meet on Feb. 26 at Trees Gym (7.p.m.).
