PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh tennis team improved to 2-1 this past week with an 8-0 sweep of crosstown rival Duquesne. The match marked the Panthers' second consecutive blanking of an opponent. The Panthers won a 7-0 decision over Bucknell last week.
At the number-one singles spot, sophomore Nikki Borza (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Area) captured a 6-2, 6-3 victory over the Dukes' Leia Zingone. Freshman Jill Williams (Media, Pa./Upper St. Clair) went on to a 6-3, 6-4 win over Krista Condrath at the second singles spot and senior Lindsay Carlson (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) captured a 6-3, 6-4 win at the third-seeded slot. Senior Dana Jafarian (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) captured a 6-1, 6-4 win in the fourth-seeded singles. Sophomore Brooke Yablonski (Dalton, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) and freshman Hayley Hughes (Sycamore, Pa./Canevin) rounded out the singles scoring each notching wins at the fifth (7-6, 7-4, 6-2) and sixth (6-3, 6-1) singles spots, respectively.
In doubles play, the tandem of Williams and Carlson defeated Zingone and Lindsey Moore in the first-seeded match with an 8-6 win. Jafarian and Borza also combined for a win at the third-seeded spot with an 8-5 win over Condrath and Carrie Nygard. The win marked Jafarian's 98th career victory. With just two more victories she will become just the fourth Panther to enter Pittsburgh's 100-victory club.
Pittsburgh returns to action Tues., Oct. 10 when it hosts Bloomsburg in a 3 p.m. contest.
