Tennis Sweeps Bucknell, 7-0

PITTSBURGH - The Panther women's tennis team split a pair of matches this past week with a 7-0 win over Bucknell Sept. 30 and dropping a 4-3 loss to Youngstown State Sept. 28.
Pittsburgh captured all of its singles victories on the way to its rout of Bucknell. Sophomore Nikki Borza (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Area) won a 6-4, 6-4 victory at the number one singles spot while freshman Jill Williams (Media, Pa./Upper St. Clair) took a decisive 6-1, 6-1 win at the second-seeded spot. Senior Lindsay Carlson (Gambrills, MD/Arundel) also went on to a 7-5, 6-4 win as the third seed, and senior Dana Jafarian (Bryn Mawr, PA/Harriton) and sophomore Brooke Yablonski (Dalton, PA/Lackawanna Trail) grabbed victories at the number four and five spots, respectively. Freshman Hayley Hughes (Sycamore, PA/Canevin) rounded out the scoring at singles with a 6-1, 7-5 win at the number five singles spot.
The Panthers also earned another point to preserve their shutout, capturing two of the three doubles matches. Williams and Carlson combined for an 8-4 win as the first doubles team and Borza and Jafarian added an 8-0 win at the third spot.
Pittsburgh dropped a 4-3 decision to host Youngstown State Thurs., Sept. 28. The Panthers and Penguins split the singles matches with each team winning three, while the Penguins took two of the three doubles contests.
At the number-two doubles spot, Williams captured a 6-3, 6-1 win over YSU's Leslie Banks. Number-five seed Jafarian added a victory of her own with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Annie Morino. The Panthers' final singles win came with freshman Hayley Hughes' 6-3, 6-2 win at the number-six spot.
In doubles competition, Borza combined with Jafarian to win an 8-4 victory over YSU's Morino and Meister at the third-seeded doubles position.
The Panthers return to action Wed., Oct. 4 when they host Duquesne in a 3 p.m. matchup.
