Panther Tennis Splits Two Matches

Pittsburgh - The Pittsburgh Panthers women's tennis team split two matches this weekend. They dropped a 5-4 decision to St. Bonaventure March 19, but rebounded with a solid 8-1 victory over Bucknell March 21.
The Panthers captured two of the three doubles matches in their victory over Bucknell. The duo of Sarah Austin (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) and Alison Bucher (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) won an 8-3 decision over Katie Roland and Tracy Honko at the second-doubles slot, while Dana Jafarian (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) and Katie Warden (Boardman, Pa./Boardman) concluded doubles competition taking an 8-5 win over Blakely Lauria and Kristin Inglis. The first-seed team of Erin Shalbrack (Maple Glenn, Pa./Upper Dublin) and Lindsay Carlson (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) dropped an 8-5 loss to Bucknell's Natalie Brown and Beth Wurzburg.
In singles competition, Pittsburgh captured each match. Austin defeated Roland in the first-seed match, 6-2, 6-3, while Shalbrack won a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Brown in the second-seed match. In the third-seed match, Carlson won, 6-2, 6-2, and Jafarian and Warden added 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-0 victories at the fourth and fifth slots, respectively. Bucher took the final singles match, 6-0, 6-1, over Kristin Inglis.
Against St. Bonaventure, three Panthers took victories in singles competition. Jafarian won a 6-0, 6-2 decision at the number-four slot, while Warden and Bucher won 6-1, 6-2, and 6-0, 6-2, respectively.
In doubles competition, the duo of Jafarian and Warden combined for an 8-3 victory at the number-three slot.
Pittsburgh's record stands at 9-6 overall. The Panthers will return to action March 28 when they host both Detroit-Mercy and Maryland-Baltimore County.
