Panther Volleyball Falls to Seton Hall

PITTSBURGH -- The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team suffered a 3-2 loss to Big East-rival Seton Hall today at Fitzgerald Field House. The loss drops the Panthers' record to 11-11 overall and 2-4 in the Big East.
Seton Hall grabbed an early lead in the match, winning a 15-9 decision in game one. The Panthers, however, shut down the Pirates' offense in games two and three to take 15-7 and 15-8 victories. In game four, Pittsburgh took a 7-0 lead, but Seton Hall rallied to win, 15-13. The Pirates held on to their momentum for a 15-12 win in game five to close out the match.
Despite the loss, Pittsburgh hit at a .267 clip on 66 kills, 22 errors and 165 attempts, compared to Seton Hall's .191 hitting percentage (55 kills, 26 errors, 152 attempts).
For the Panthers, junior Paula Zemrowski (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) hit .314 and recorded five career-highs in the match. Zemrowski notched career-bests with 23 kills, 51 attempts, 12 digs, five aces and two solo blocks.
Also leading the Panthers' attack were juniors Melissa Alpers (Milford, Mass./Milford) and Jenna Birkel (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Pius X), with 14 kills apiece. Alpers also added 14 digs, one ace and one block assist. Sophomore setter Lisa Riggle (Gillette, Wy./Campbell County) also performed well, recording 56 assists, seven digs and one ace.
Pittsburgh returns to action, Wednesday, Oct. 28, when they host crosstown rival Duquesne at 7:30 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House. The Panthers return to conference play when they host West Virginia, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m.
