PITTSBURGH – Nikki Scherer and Crockett Schooler of track & field were named the University of Pittsburgh Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
Scherer, a sophomore, continued her strong outdoor season this past weekend at Virginia as she notched a pair of victories as the Panthers took on Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland. Scherer put together her best run of the season in the 200m dash as she claimed the victory, crossing the line in a personal best time of 24.23 seconds. She was then able to help the Panthers 4x100m relay squad collect the win over a very talented Virginia squad as they crossed the line in 45.59 seconds, a season-best time for the quartet.
Schooler, a freshman, had his best weekend on the track of his career this past weekend at Virginia as he was able to record a pair of victories in hurdle events, the first wins of his Pitt career. The Pickerington, Ohio, native opened up his afternoon with an impressive run in the 110m hurdles as he claimed the victory after crossing the finish line with a personal best time of 14.45 seconds. Schooler then back up his win in the 110m hurdles with another victory in the 400m hurdles as he crossed the line with a personal best time of 52.95 seconds, over two seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
The Panthers will compete next at the Tennessee Relays Thursday through Saturday, as well as the Bison Outdoor Classic Saturday and Sunday.
