PITTSBURGH – Sidney Washington of gymnastics and Nino Bonaccorsi of wrestling were named the Pitt Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
In her career debut meet, Washington crossed the 9.800 threshold on all but one event and earned three podium finishes – including the individual event title on floor exercise with a 9.850. In her first time competing in the all-around, the Ann Arbor, Mich. native recorded a 38.450. As the anchor for the Panthers’ vault and floor lineups, her performances resulted in Top 100 rankings nationally in those events, as well as on beam and the all-around.
Bonaccorsi helped the No. 19 Pitt wrestling team pull off a big dual upset over No. 6 Arizona State last Friday night at Fitzgerald Field House. The redshirt senior 197-pounder pinned Jake Ortiz in the first period to score six valuable team points for the Panthers (5-3), which secured the win over the visiting Sun Devils.
Pitt had trailed Arizona State 16-6 in the dual before teammates James Lledo and Gregg Harvey won matches to set the stage for Bonaccorsi. The No. 9-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds found his first pin of the season to send Pitt fans at Fitzgerald Field House into a frenzy, knowing that the Panthers had taken an insurmountable lead in the dual.
The No. 19 Panthers beat the No. 6 Sun Devils, 24-19, in the end, giving head coach Keith Gavin his highest-ranked victory in a dual during his time leading the Pitt wrestling program.
