PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh cross country student-athletes Gillian Schriever and Aaron Lauer were named First National Bank Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Schriever, a sophomore, posted a personal-record 6K time of 20:36 at the Penn State National Open Friday morning at the Blue & White Course in University Park, Pa. The Tuckerton, N.J., native led the Panthers with a seventh-place finish out of 224 runners. It was her second top-10 placement of the season and the fourth of her cross country career. Her strong finish helped Pitt place 10th out of a competitive field of 19, which included four USTFCCCA-ranked squads.
At the same event, Lauer helped the Pitt men’s team place ahead of several higher-ranked regional teams, such as Charlotte (No. 11 - Southeast), Duquesne (No. 11 - Mid-Atlantic), Villanova (No. 5 - Mid-Atlantic), Bucknell (No. 10 - Mid-Atlantic), Buffalo (No. 10 - Northeast) and Cornell (No. 6 - Northeast). The senior paced the Panthers with a time of 25:32 in the 5.2-mile race and placed 23rd overall out of 111 competitors. It was his third consecutive race with the top time for Pitt. His efforts helped the Panthers jump from No. 13 in the Mid-Atlantic rankings to No. 8 in the polls posted Monday.
Up next, the Panthers will travel to Cary, N.C., for the 2016 ACC Cross Country Championships, set for Friday, Oct. 28, in Cary, N.C.
