PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Desiree Garland and Blair Calvo were named First National Bank Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Garland, a senior, earned the first ACC women's track & field gold medal in program history with a win in the 400m dash Saturday at the ACC Indoor Championships at Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex. The Duquesne, Pa., native's time of 53.12 in the final was a personal best mark. With the win, Garland became the first Panther to earn All-ACC women's indoor first team honors. The All-ACC accolades are the first of her career.
She earned the Panthers' fourth overall ACC indoor title in program history, and the third ACC indoor individual championship, joining Carvin Nkanata (200m, 2014) and Andrew Wells (weight throw, 2016). The men's indoor 4x400m relay team of Micah Murray, Nkanata, Desmond Palmer and Brycen Spratling was champion in 2014.
Calvo, a redshirt junior, was electric in his second game back for Pitt baseball since undergoing Tommy John surgery. He tossed 6.0 innings of work in the finale of the Wofford-USC Upstate Tournament against Seton Hall, allowing just four hits and two walks but fanning a career-best eight.
The Panthers' outdoor track & field season kicks off March 16-17 at the 49er Classic in Charlotte, N.C.
Up next for Pitt baseball is the Sunshine State Classic (March 2-6), where the Panthers will face UMass, Butler and Saint Peter’s at Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee, Fla.
