Zach Witherspoon joined the University of Pittsburgh as Director of Sports Science in June of 2024. He oversees the development and implementation of sports science initiatives across all 19 varsity sports. His role focuses on optimizing athletic performance through data-informedtraining, practice and recovery strategies.
Prior to Pitt, Witherspoon built a strong foundation in strength and conditioning, having worked at EXOS, New Mexico State University, and in the NFL. His experience spans various parts of the training process, from preparation to performance and return to play.
A graduate of Carson-Newman University with a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Witherspoon also holds a master's degree from the University of Texas-Tyler. He is certified as a Certified Performance Science Specialist (CPSS), Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), and Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC).
A native of Tennessee, Witherspoon currently resides in Pittsburgh with his wife, Nicole, and their son, Micah.
