Women's Soccer Battles to Scoreless Draw with No. 4 Duke

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's soccer team battled to a draw with No. 4 Duke Sunday at Ambrose Urbanic Field. Elli Johnson made a career-high six saves in the contest to help the Panthers secure their first ACC point of the year.
The Blue Devils outshot the Panthers 18-7, but Pitt held Duke scoreless for the first time this season.
Duke got the first offensive opportunities of the game, but Pitt countered quickly taking two shots of its own in the opening 15 minutes.
The Blue Devils continued to press in the first half, looking to break the deadlock. Duke got off three consecutive shots in the 37th minute, but a save by Johnson and two consecutive blocks kept the game tied at zero.
Coming out of the break, Duke took the first shot, but Johnson came up with the save.
Pitt had its first dangerous opportunity of the second half in the 59th minute as Lola Abraham sent a shot in that was saved by the Duke keeper.
In the 69th minute, a scramble in front of the net nearly allowed Duke to get on the board, but a team save from the Panthers and a handball on the Blue Devils thwarted the opportunity.
The Panthers looked like they had broken the deadlock in the 79th minute as Sofia Doheny sent the ball to the back of the net on a breakaway opportunity, but the officials ruled her offsides and the scoreless draw continued.
Pitt turned up the offensive pressure in the final 10 minutes of action, creating dangerous opportunities in front of the Duke net. With a minute remaining in regulation, Sage Stelzer beat the Duke goalkeeper as she came out of the box, leaving the net open. Her shot was deflected and Adi Bianchin connected on a bicycle kick, but the shot was saved to keep the clean sheet.
In the dwindling seconds of the match, a cross from Stelzer found the head of Katie Zailski, but her shot sailed just high as the final whistle sounded.
Sunday's result is the first ever tie between the Blue Devils in the Panthers in the series history.

Pitt has a midweek bye before returning to home pitch Saturday to host Miami. Kick off for that game is set for 7 p.m.
