Panthers Score 2-1 Win in Season Opener

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's soccer team secured a 2-1 win over Youngstown State in its season opener Wednesday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field. First-half goals from freshman Maci Tew and junior Lola Abraham propelled the Panthers to their 10^th consecutive win in home openers.

Pitt controlled possession early, working into the YSU defensive third and drawing a corner kick in the 15^th minute. Tew took the corner sending a ball just over the YSU keeper's hands for her first collegiate goal and the Panthers first of the 2026 season.

The Penguins responded quickly, sending a long ball over the top of the Pitt backline, and the YSU striker poked the ball into the back of the net in the 22^nd minute for the equalizer.

A tic-tac-toe play from Celine Ottah, Adi Bianchin, and Abraham gave Pitt the lead once again in the 38^th minute. Ottah played the ball into the 18-yard box to the feet of Bianchin. Bianchin sent a pass across the net and Abraham finished for her third career goal.

Neither team could add to their total in the second half, despite Pitt creating several dangerous opportunities in front of the YSU goal. The Panthers thought they had a penalty kick opportunity in the 72^nd minute as Ottah was battling for a ball in the box, but a VAR review overturned the call.

Freshman goalie Elli Johnson made her first collegiate save in the match for the Panthers, facing just two shots on goal over 90 minutes.

Pitt controlled the match offensively, outshooting the Penguins 13-6. The Panthers also led in corners, drawing 15 and conceding just three.

With the victory, the Panthers improve to 13-1-2 all-time in home openers.
