PITTSBURGH – Pitt outfielder Lorenzo Carrier was named to the Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List, USA Baseball announced today.
The Golden Spikes Award is given annually to the best amateur baseball player in the country. The list features 45 of the nation's top athletes from college and high school baseball.
Lorenzo Carrier has been one of the best hitters in the entire country so far this season. He is batting .433 with 50 RBI, 39 hits, 38 runs scored, 13 home runs, five doubles and a .967 slugging percentage. Carrier has worked a nation-leading 35 walks while posting a 1.565 OPS through Pitt's first 27 games of the season.
Nationally, Carrier ranks first in walks (35), second in RBI (50) and on-base percentage (.598), third in slugging percentage (.967) and twelfth on home runs (13). Carrier's .433 batting average leads the entire ACC.
The redshirt senior went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in Pitt's 27-3 win over Mercyhurst. Carrier contributed to the Panthers' 27-run output on Tuesday, the second-most runs scored in a game in program history.
Carrier is one of the 26 athletes to have played his way onto the list since the announcement of the preseason watch list on February 6th.
Following the 25-player semifinalist announcement on May 10, the three finalists will be revealed on June 10, and then the winner will be named on June 29 at 7:30 p.m. ET during a presentation on MLB Network.
