PITTSBURGH – Pitt rallied late for the second straight game, but Syracuse pulled away in the eighth inning to secure a 9-6 victory, Thursday night at Vartabedian Field.

Syracuse struck first with a leadoff solo home run from Jadyn Burney for a 1-0 advantage and added another solo shot in the second inning from Erika Zamora to take a 2-0 lead. Pitt answered in the third when Ahmari Braden launched a solo home run to center field to cut the deficit to one.

The Orange broke things open in the fifth inning as Kaimi Tulua delivered a grand slam to deep center field, extending Syracuse's lead to 6-1. Addison Toczek responded for Pitt with her first career home run, a solo shot to center field, trimming the margin to 6-3.

Pitt mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning. Alena Ball doubled and KK Esparza followed with a single before Ball scored on a passed ball to make it 7-4. Camryn Murphy then tied the game with a two-run home run. The Panthers threatened again in the frame, loading the bases with two outs, but Syracuse recorded a strikeout to end the inning.

Syracuse regained control in the top of the eighth, plating three runs to secure the 9-6 win.

Madison Knight earned the victory, tossing an 8.0 complete game in the circle, while Amelia Long was charged with the loss.

Pitt and Syracuse continue the series tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
