STANFORD, Calif. – Pitt dropped a 5-1 decision to No. 19 Stanford on Saturday at Stanford Softball Stadium.

Pitt and Stanford battled through a scoreless start as pitcher Bekah Duck worked out of early trouble. Stanford loaded the bases in the bottom of the first, but Duck escaped the jam with a pop up and a groundout to keep the Cardinal off the board.

Duck continued to settle in, retiring the side in the bottom of the third to keep the game scoreless through three innings.

Pitt broke through in the top of the fourth. Gracie Helton delivered an RBI double to plate the game's first run and give the Panthers a 1-0 advantage.

Stanford threatened again in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases for the second time in the game. Duck worked out of another difficult situation as Emily Jones grounded out to second base to end the frame.

The Cardinal took control in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring four runs in the frame. Stanford used a two-run home run to take the lead before adding two more runs in the frame to move ahead 4-1. Gwen Sparks entered the circle in relief during the inning.

Stanford added an insurance run in the sixth to extend the lead to 5-1, which held as the final score.

Helton led the Panthers at the plate, going 1-for-3 with the team's lone RBI. Tieley Vaughn and Shelby Frazier also recorded hits for Pitt.

Duck (3-3) took the loss after pitching 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits while striking out two.

Pitt returns to action tomorrow to continue the series against Stanford.
