STANFORD, Calif. – Pitt battled No. 19 Stanford in the series opener Friday night, highlighted by a standout performance from Camryn Murphy and a steady outing in the circle from Kyra Pittman at Stanford Softball Stadium.

Murphy led the Panthers offensively, driving in both Pitt runs while finishing 2-for-3 with a triple, home run and two RBI.

Mackenzie Reese recorded Pitt's first hit of the game with a two-out single to shallow center field in the top of the second inning. Murphy followed with a triple to the gap to bring Reese home and give the Panthers an early 1-0 lead.

Stanford answered in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases on two singles and a fielder's choice before Taryn Kern delivered a two-run single to right field to put the Cardinal in front, 2-1.

Pitt threatened again in the third as Calle Henne and KK Esparza delivered back-to-back two-out singles to put runners on first and second, but Stanford escaped the inning. The Cardinal extended their lead in the bottom half when Addyson Sheppard launched a two-run home run to make it 4-1.

Murphy struck again in the fourth, launching a solo home run to center field to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Pittman worked 4.1 innings in the circle, allowing just two earned runs while striking out one against the nationally ranked Cardinal lineup.

Stanford responded in the bottom of the inning with a double and a single before a sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 5-2. The Cardinal added three more runs in the sixth to secure the 8-2 final.
