CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Pitt dropped the series opener at No. 18 Virginia, 10-0, in five innings Friday afternoon at Palmer Park.
Virginia jumped out early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. The Cavaliers took advantage of a Panther error to push across the game's first run before Kelsey Hackett delivered a two-run single to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Cavaliers added six more runs in the second inning to pull away. A bases-clearing double from Macee Eaton made it 6-0, and Hackett followed with a two-out triple to stretch the advantage to 7-0.
Pitt threatened briefly in the first inning when Alena Ball reached on an error and advanced into scoring position, but the Panthers were unable to capitalize. Gracie Helton also reached with a walk in the second, marking the only other early baserunner in the first two frames.
Tieley Vaughn broke up the no-hitter in the top of the third, lacing a double into the gap with one out. Ahmari Braden added a two-out single in the fifth for Pitt's second hit of the contest.
Virginia pushed its final run across in the bottom of the third when Eaton beat out a throw at first with two outs to extend the inning and make it 10-0.
In relief, Allie Lukaszewicz tossed 2.1 innings and retired the side in order in the fourth. She allowed one earned run on three hits.
Pitt and Virginia continue the series tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
