SANTA CLARA, CA – The Pitt Baseball team's (12-3) eight-game winning streak came to an end on Tuesday night as they fell on the road to the Santa Clara Broncos, 4-3.
The Panthers clawed back in the later innings, and threatened in the top of the ninth inning, as they put the game-tying run in scoring position and the go-ahead run on base in the final frame.
After winning multiple national player of the week honors for his performance last week, Lorenzo Carrier picked up right where he left off in Tuesday's game at Santa Clara. Carrier hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning and drove in another run on an RBI single in the seventh. The week four consensus national player of the week went 2-4 with a homer run and two RBI on Tuesday.
In Pitt's last six games, Carrier is 18-for-23 at the plate with 26 RBI, 14 runs scored, 7 home runs, two triples and two doubles. He has hit a home run in each of those six contests.
Jake Kendro came off of the bench in the early part of the game and lined a double to left in his first at-bat. Julian Irizarry and Kai Wagner accounted for Pitt's other two hits, both singling in the middle innings. Wagner has now reached safely in all 15 of Pitt's games.
Andrew Luczak and Freddy Beruvides Jr. combined for 5.1 scoreless innings in relief as they both kept the Bronco offense quiet. Luczak (2.1 IP, 0 BB, 2 K) and Beruvides Jr. (3.0 IP, 1 BB, 3 K) only allowed one hit each in their relief appearances.
Lorenzo Carrier continued his stretch as one of the hottest hitters on college baseball with a solo home run in the top of the first inning to get the Panthers on the board early.
Santa Clara scored four runs on two hits in the bottom of the second inning as they jumped out to a 4-1 lead after two frames.
Pitt got a run back in the top of the fourth inning to cut the Bronco lead in half. Derrick Tarpley Jr. walked and Julian Irizarry singled with one out. Both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch for AJ Nessler who drove in Tarpley Jr. on a sacrifice fly to center. The Panthers trailed 4-2 through four innings.
AJ Nessler led off the top of the seventh inning with a walk and stole second to put himself in scoring position. With one out, Carrier added to his nation-leading RBI total with an RBI single up the middle to cut the deficit to just one. Santa Clara led 4-3 after seven innings.
Freddy Beruvides tossed three scoreless innings in relief the keep the Broncos at bay. He struck out the side in the eighth inning to give Pitt another chance in the ninth.
AJ Nessler, and pinch-hitter Jackson Cooke, each worked one-out walks that put the tying run in scoring position and the go-ahead run on first. The Panthers would hit into a game-ending double play as their eight-game win streak came to an end on Tuesday. Pitt fell to Santa Clara, 4-3.
The Panthers kick off conference play this Friday at Stanford. First pitch for the series opener is slated for 9:05 PM ET/6:05 PM PT.
