Pitt's Comeback Falls Short as Cal Runs Away with 95-80 Victory

PITTSBURGH – Pitt outscored Cal in the second half, but came up short, falling 95-80 at the Petersen Events Center Sunday afternoon.
Four Panthers reached double figures in scoring, led by Theresa Hagans Jr. with 19 points and five assists. Mikayla Johnson added 16 points and five rebounds, while Carla Viegas finished with 14 points, highlighted by four three-pointers.
Megan Hollingsworth contributed a career-high 12 points, knocking down a pair from beyond the arc. Fatima Diakhate paced the team on the glass with nine rebounds to go along with seven points and four assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In Cal's first trip to Pittsburgh, the Golden Bears came out firing, shooting 73.3% in the opening quarter and 60% from three in the first half to take control early and build a 54-32 lead at the break. Lulu Twidale powered the Golden Bears early and finished with a game-high 32 points on 8-of-12 shooting, knocking down seven three-pointers.
Pitt found its rhythm in the third quarter, shooting 12-for-17 from the field and outscoring California 28-24 in the frame to chip away at the deficit. Hagans Jr. and Johnson each scored eight in the frame, while Viegas and Lauren Rust added six a piece. The Panthers continued to push in the fourth, trimming the margin to 11, but Cal answered with timely baskets to seal the win.
Pitt shot efficiently from three-point range, finishing 9-of-16 from beyond the arc. The Panthers' defense forced 12 turnovers, and the bench added 26 points in the effort.
