Pitt Drops Home Contest to Syracuse

PITTSBURGH – Pitt battled early but couldn't overcome a decisive second quarter run, falling to Syracuse, 84-51, on Thursday night inside the Petersen Events Center.
Three Panthers reached double-figures, led by Theresa Hagans Jr. with 13 points and a team-high five assists. Mikayla Johnson added 10 points for Pitt, notching her 18th double-digit performance on the season along with eight boards. Fatima Diakhate also tallied 10 points, shooting 5-of-6 on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers were in the mix early, trailing by just one after the opening quarter, 21-20. Pitt shot 53.3 percent and briefly grabbed a three-point lead late in the first behind a quick 10-0 run, led by Johnson with six points in the quarter. Syracuse seized control in the second quarter, using a 22-4 period to build a 43-24 halftime advantage. The Orange continued to stretch the lead in the third, outscoring Pitt in all four frames to take the win. Syracuse shot 51.5 percent from the field and knocked down 12 three-pointers. The Panthers were held to 37.7 percent shooting and committed 20 turnovers, which led to 27 points for the Orange.
