PITTSBURGH – The Pitt Panthers (8-2) swept Saturday's doubleheader and this weekend's series over UNC Greensboro. The Panthers outscored the Spartans 21-3 on Saturday afternoon.
Pitt scored 35 runs in their three wins this weekend over the Spartans, including fourteen-run outputs in the series opener and finale.
The longball proved lethal for the Panthers in Saturday's doubleheader, scoring 13 of their 21 runs via home runs. Pitt hit three three-run home runs and a grand slam over the two games.
Pitt's performance on the mound was not to be overlooked. The Panther pitching staff allowed just three runs over 16 innings of baseball on Saturday. LHP Vincent Spizzoucco shined for the second-consecutive week. He earned his second win of the season and struck out eight while allowing just one run over his six innings.
Offensively, Carter Dierdorf hit two home runs and drove in seven runs across the two games. Lorenzo Carrier had three hits and drove in a season-high five runs in game two of the doubleheader.
Game One Recap
Trey Fenderson led off the bottom of the second with his first hit of the day, and fifth of the weekend, on the single to left. He moved up to second on a Joey Baran walk and scored on a Sebastian Pisacreta RBI single up the middle. On the very next pitch, Carter Dierdorf launched a three-run blast to center that gave the Panthers a four-run lead.
Vincent Spizzoucco continued to deal on the mound for Pitt, striking out eight through five scoreless innings.
Sebastian Pisacreta blasted Pitt's second three-run home run of the day in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lorenzo Carrier worked a walk to lead off the inning and advanced to second on Trey Fenderson's second hit of the game. They both moved into scoring position after Joey Baran laid down a sacrifice bunt with no outs. Pisacreta hit his third home run of the season and put the Panthers up 7-0 after five innings.
UNC Greensboro scratched a run across on a single to center in the top of the sixth inning. Spizzoucco finished his day with eight strikeouts while allowing just one run and no walks over six innings. He's surrendered just one run over his last 15 innings of work.
Freddy Beruvides Jr. came out of the bullpen in the seventh inning and earned a three-inning save. Beruvides struck out a pair and allowed just two base runners over in his three scoreless innings.
The Panthers clinched the series with their 7-1 win in game one of their Saturday doubleheader.
Game Two Recap
The Panthers came out swinging to open up game two of the doubleheader, plating 10 runs over the first two innings
Lorenzo Carrier opened up the scoring by lining a two-run double in the gap in the bottom of the first. Two walks in the ensuing at-bats loaded the bases for Carter Dierdorf who punished a 1-2 pitch over the netting in right-center for a grand slam and his second home run of the afternoon. Pitt led 6-0 after the first inning.
The Panthers added four more runs in the bottom of the second, highlighted by a Lorenzo Carrier three-run blast of the batter's eye in center. Kai Wagner drove in Pitt's first run of the inning on a single to right.
The Spartans got two runs back in the top of the third and the Panthers led 10-2 after three innings.
Joey Ciancimino relieved Drew Lafferty and threw two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Lafferty had another solid outing on the mound, allowing just two runs on three hits over four innings. He struck out four and earned his second win of the season.
The Panthers added for more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as they went on to win game two in just seven innings.
