Fast Starts Fuel Pitt’s Sweep at Texan Classic

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Fast starts set the tone for the Pitt softball team Friday at the Texan Classic, as the Panthers jumped in front early in both contests on their way to a 5-0 win over Army and an 8-5 victory over Tarleton State at the TSU Softball Complex.
Pitt scored in the second inning to seize control against Army before breaking the game open in the fourth, then erupted for six runs in the opening frame against Tarleton State to complete the sweep. With the pair of wins, the Panthers improved to 7-5 on the season.
Game One: Pitt 5, Army 0
Behind a dominant outing in the circle from Bekah Duck, the Panthers blanked Army to open the day.
Duck (1-2) tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits over seven innings while striking out six. She limited Army to only one runner reaching third base and faced just 23 batters in the contest.
Pitt struck first in the second inning on an RBI single from Addison Oberbreckli. The Panthers then broke the game open in the fourth, plating four runs, highlighted by an RBI single from Tieley Vaughn, while capitalizing on Army miscues.
Gracie Helton doubled as part of a six-hit effort, while Calle Henne, Oberbreckli and Vaughn each scored. Pitt finished with five runs on six hits and did not commit an error.
Game Two: Pitt 8, Tarleton State 5
The Panthers' offense erupted early in the nightcap, scoring six runs in the first inning to seize control.
After Pitt drew three walks to open the game, Calle Henne delivered a two-run double down the left-field line to put Pitt on the board. A wild pitch brought in another run, Mackenzie Reese added a sacrifice fly, and Addison Toczek capped the frame with a two-run double as Pitt built a 6-0 advantage.
Tarleton State answered with a run in the first and added another in the fourth before pulling within two in the fifth on a three-run homer by Macie Vickers.
Pitt responded in the sixth. Tieley Vaughn doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on an RBI single from Gracie Helton to extend the lead to 8-5.
Vaughn led the Panthers at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Toczek added two hits and two RBIs, while Henne drove in two and finished with a pair of doubles. Pitt totaled 10 hits and drew eight walks in the contest.
In the circle, Kyra Pittman (3-0) earned the win after allowing two runs over four innings. Gwen Sparks recorded the final nine outs to pick up her first career save.
Pitt returns to action Saturday in the Texan Classic with two more games. The Panthers will face Tulsa at 11 am ET, followed by Texas A&M - Corpus Christi at 4 pm ET.
