Fast Start Fuels Georgia Tech in 84-68 Win Over Pitt

PITTSBURGH – Georgia Tech (12-15, 7-8 ACC) used a dominant first half to pull away from Pitt (8-20, 1-14 ACC), handing the Panthers an 84-68 loss Thursday night at the Petersen Events Center.
Freshman guard Theresa Hagans Jr. led the Panthers with 19 points and five assists, adding three rebounds. Mikayla Johnson added 16 points and four rebounds, while Fatima Diakhate recorded a strong all-around effort with 15 points and a team-high 14 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. Carla Viegas chipped in nine points off the bench, and Megan Hollingsworth added five.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Yellow Jackets shot 61.1 percent in the opening quarter and built a double-digit lead early, finishing the first period ahead 29-16. Georgia Tech continued to extend its advantage in the second, outscoring Pitt 25-10 to take a 54-26 lead into the break. The Yellow Jackets stretched their margin to as many as 35 in the third quarter, but the Panthers wouldn't go down without a fight.
Pitt responded with its best stretch after halftime, putting together a 10-0 run midway through the third and outscoring Georgia Tech 26-16 in the frame. The Panthers shot 52.9 percent in the third quarter and outscored the Yellow Jackets again in the fourth, 16-14, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
Georgia Tech shot 48.4 percent from the field and knocked down 10 three-pointers in the contest. Brianna Turnage paced the Yellow Jackets with 20 points and 21 rebounds, while Talayah Walker also scored 20.
The Panthers scored 34 points in the paint. Pitt received 26 points from its bench and shot 87.5 percent from the free throw line (14-of-16).
