Fourth Quarter Push Propels Pitt Past Boston College for First ACC Win

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – A late fourth quarter push propelled Pitt women's basketball to a 64-61 win over Boston College on Sunday evening at Conte Forum for the Panthers' first ACC win of the season.
Pitt (8-9, 1-3 ACC) outscored Boston College (4-13, 0-4 ACC) 23-8 in the final quarter, fueled by a standout performance from Theresa Hagans Jr., to secure the Panthers' first road win. Hagans Jr. tallied a career-high 24 points, shooting 6-of-7 from the field, including 3-of-3 from three point range and knocked down 9-of-10 free throws in a 31 minute effort off the bench. Carla Viegas added 12 points on four made three-pointers, all in the second quarter.
Lauren Rust turned in a strong all-around effort with eight points, a career-high 15 rebounds, four assists and two blocks, while Fatima Diakhate finished with four points, six rebounds and two blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Pitt struggled offensively in the opening quarter, scoring just seven points, but responded with a dominant 28 point second quarter to take a 35-26 lead into halftime. The Panthers shot 56.3% from the field in the period and went 6-of-9 from beyond the arc, led Viegas' sharp shooting.
Boston College surged in the third quarter with a 27-point frame to briefly regain the lead, but Pitt's defense tightened over the final 10 minutes. The Panthers limited the Eagles to 3-of-15 shooting in the fourth quarter, holding them scoreless for the final 6:44 as Lily Carmody connected on a three as time expired.
Pitt closed the game on a 20-3 run and limited Boston College to just eight points in the quarter. Hagans Jr. scored the first 10 Pitt points in the final frame on two threes, a layup and a jumper. The freshman guard finished with 17 points in the period as she went 7-of-8 from the free-throw line to seal the victory.

Pitt returns to action next Sunday, Jan. 11, on the road at Louisville. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside the KFC Yum! Center, with the game airing on the CW.
