PITTSBURGH – The No. 9 Pitt volleyball team (4-2, 0-0 ACC) defeated Jacksonville (4-2, 0-0 ASUN) 3-1, 24-26, 25-17, 25-12, 25-9 on Sunday afternoon at the Fitzgerald Field House. Ryla Jones recorded a career-high 11 kills, hitting an impressive .769. Blaire Bayless (13), Olivia Babcock (10) and Dagmar Mourits (10) all recorded double-digit kills, and setter Brooke Mosher ran the offense with 36 assists, eight digs, four aces, two kills and a block.
The Panthers and Dolphins competed in a tightly contested first set as both teams were tied at 19-19. Once again, the score was tied at 24-24, but two Dolphin kills secured the first set victory for Jacksonville.
Similar to the first set, both teams went point for point until a Pitt service error brought the score to 15-14 at the media timeout. Haiti Tautua'a and Mosher combined for a 5-1 service run to force Jacksonville to talk things over right after the media break. Mosher did not let up as she notched two more aces in the run. Jones terminated two of the last three balls to give Pitt the 25-17 set two win.
The Panthers began set three hot as they caused Jacksonville to call a timeout down 11-4. Seven of the next nine Pitt points came from kills as Bayless, Babcock, Mosher, Kelley and Jones put away a ball. The Dolphins called their final timeout to stop the Pitt momentum at 20-11. Mallorie Meyer continued her strong serving presence and helped closed out the third set 25-12 in favor of the Panthers.
Pitt carried over its impressive play from set three into the fourth after getting out to a 14-4 lead. A pair of Babcock aces paved the way for the Pitt as it finished on an 11-5 run to win the fourth set, 25-9 and the match, 3-1.
Pitt hits the road next week for three important matches. The Panthers take on No. 4 Kentucky on Wednesday, Sept. 10 on ESPN and then head to Dayton, Ohio to play Wright State on Friday, Sept. Sept. 12 and Ohio on Sept. 13.
