PITTSBURGH – The No. 7 Pitt volleyball team (5-2, 0-0 ACC) played a well-rounded game on Wednesday night against reigning SEC Champion No. 3 Kentucky (3-2, 0-0 SEC), sweeping the Wildcats, 25-19, 25-22, 25-23. Olivia Babcock shared a match-high 15 kills while hitting .306 from the right side. Brooke Mosher dished 39 assists with a team best 13 digs and led Pitt to a team .349 hitting percentage.
Both teams went back and forth for the majority of the first set, but a block from Bre Kelley and Dagmar Mourits allowed the Panthers to hold a 15-12 advantage at the media timeout. Four kills from Bayless in the following stretch forced Kentucky to call a timeout, down 20-17. Three Pitt kills and a solo block from Kelley caused the Wildcats to talk things over, but a Mallorie Meyer ace secured the first set victory 25-19 for the Panthers.
Pitt and Kentucky were tied 9-9, but a 4-0 run by the Panthers powered by a pair of Bayless blocks caused Kentucky to call a timeout before the media break. The Wildcats came within one point multiple times in the following stretch, but Kentucky called their final timeout after a pair of Wildcat errors and a kill from Babcock. A termination from Kelley and Mourits allowed Pitt to win the second set, 25-22.
Like the first two sets, Pitt and Kentucky battled as Pitt held a narrow 15-14 lead at the media break. The Wildcats took a 17-16 lead, but Bayless once again came up clutch on the offensive end with a pair of kills, and the Wildcats called a timeout to stop Pitt's momentum. Kentucky rallied to tie things up at 20-20, and Head Coach Dan Fisher and the Panthers regrouped. The Pitt offense continued to roll, and despite another Kentucky timeout, Babcock terminated the final kill to give Pitt the 25-23 third set win and 3-0 top-five sweep.
The Panthers head to Wright State to conclude the away slate against the Raiders on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. and Ohio on Saturday at 2 p.m. The match on Friday can be viewed on ESPN+.
