Panthers Fall to SMU, 4-0

PITTSBURGH — The Pitt women's soccer team (5-5-2, 1-3 ACC) suffered a 4-0 loss to SMU on Thursday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
After a scoreless first half, the Mustangs surged late with four second-half goals to earn the win in Pittsburgh.
Both sides traded chances in the opening 45 minutes, with the Panthers generating three shots on goal while holding SMU without a shot on target.
Pitt came out aggressive to start the second half, recording two shots and earning two corner kicks within the first five minutes. The Panthers continued to apply pressure in the final third, including a near miss by Lucia Wells in the 55th minute.
SMU opened the scoring in the 63rd minute, capitalizing on a corner kick that deflected inside the box and found Nyah Rose for a one-touch finish.
The Mustangs doubled their lead in the 70th minute, as a run up the left side set up a cross into the box that Sammy Nieves tucked away. SMU added two more goals in the 76th and 80th minutes, with finishes from Sydney Japic and Rose to seal the result.
Pitt outshot SMU 13-12 and both teams recorded five corner kicks.

The Panthers hit the road next week to face Duke on Thursday, Oct. 2, in Durham. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., with coverage streaming live on ACC Network Extra.
