PITTSBURGH — The Pitt women's soccer team (5-4-2, 1-2 ACC) defeated Boston College 2-1 on Thursday night in Chestnut Hill behind a pair of first half finishes.
Freshman Katie Ellermeyer netted her sixth goal of the season, tying her for the national lead in goals among first-year players.
The Panthers opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Sage Stelzer sent a pass up the left line to Margaret Wilde, who slotted a left-footed finish into the net. It marked Wilde's third goal of the season.
Pitt doubled its lead in the 35th minute as Wilde assisted Ellermeyer inside the box for a composed finish into the net. The goal was Ellermeyer's second in ACC play and sixth overall, placing her atop the team's scoring chart.
Boston College responded early in the second frame, with Sophie Reale capitalizing on a loose ball in the 48th minute to cut the deficit in half. Pitt's defense held strong, limiting the Eagles to just four shots in the second half to secure the victory. Junior goalkeeper Abby Reisz recorded two saves in the win.
The Panthers controlled the match offensively, outshooting Boston College 22-7, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. Wilde led the attack with four shots on target, and Lola Abraham nearly added a third goal with an effort that struck the post. A potential goal from Sophie Rourke was waived off, keeping the score at 2-1.
With the victory, Pitt earns its first ACC win of the season while remaining unbeaten in road contests.
