PITTSBURGH – Panther graduate defender Abby Thorne will play in the World Games for the second time, as was announced this month by Team Australia. Thorne will join 11 other Aussies on the roster that will travel to Chengdu, China and compete in the women's lacrosse competition between August 7-17.
Thorne played for her national team in 2022 at the World Championships and World Games and has joined the green and gold on multiple other occasions since, as she looks to make the Olympic team in lacrosse's debut in 2028.
The World Games features Lacrosse Sixes, with six players per team on the pitch. 'Sixes' brings the excitement and speed of lacrosse in a smaller, faster, more accessible format. Games are played in four 8-minute quarters. The game incorporates a 'shot clock'; once an offensive possession begins, the team must take a shot on goal within 30 seconds. The team scoring the most goals wins the match.
With the event taking place only every four years, the 11-day event aspires to equal and exceed the importance of World Championships for the represented sports and disciplines. For many athletes, The World Games is pinnacle event of their sporting career. There is no higher goal to achieve in than to become The World Games Champion. For The World Games 2025, approximately 4,000 world-class athletes from over 100 countries will compete in 253 medal events for gold.
Thorne closed her Pitt career with her name all over the record books, recording the most starts (68), third-most games played (68) and sitting in first in ground balls (92) and caused turnovers (54).
