PITTSBURGH - Pitt (27-24, 10-18) fell in game one of their series to No. 15 Clemson on Thursday night at Charles L. Cost Field, 6-1.

Sebastian Pisacreta and Lorenzo Carrier each worked a pair of walks as the Panthers were held hitless in the loss. Carrier scored Pitt's lone run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a wild pitch.

Pitt starting pitcher Patrick Gardner threw six innings and set a season high for strikeouts with seven on Thursday evening. His first four outs of the night came via the strikeout as he held the No. 15 Tigers scoreless through the first two frames.

Clemson added a run in each of the next two innings and led 2-0 after four.

The Tigers scored two runs in the top of the sixth and eighth innings, extending their lead to six.

The Panthers got on the board with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Lorenzo Carrier worked a leadoff walk and Jayden Melendez was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second with no one out. Jackson Cooke pinch-hit for Jake Kendro and appeared to hit a three-run home run on his flyout to deep left center. Carrier advanced to third on play and scored in the next at-bat on a wild pitch. Clemson would induce a double play one batter later to end the inning. Pitt trailed 6-1 heading into the ninth.

Pitt put two runners on in the final frame with walks from Pisacreta and Carrier but were unable to score. The Panthers lost game, 6-1.
