MINNEAPOLIS – The Pitt softball team split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium, defeating North Dakota 5-3 in the first game and falling to Minnesota 8-0 in five innings in the second game of the day.
Pitt 5, North Dakota 3
Kyra Pittman gave up a leadoff home run but bounced back and retired the next three batters to end the top of the first inning. North Dakota scored a run in each of the first three frames to take an early 3-1 lead.
KK Esparza led off the bottom of the second inning with the double as the Panthers loaded the bases with one out. Alena Ball drove in the first run for the Panthers with a ground ball to third base and Camryn Murphy tied the game in the bottom of the third with a two-run homer to center field, 3-3.
The Panthers and Hawks exchanged 1-2-3 innings in the fourth to keep the game tied. Kylie Griggs got a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth and was aggressive on the base paths to reach third base after a muffed throw on a stolen base attempt. Tieley Vaughn reached base on a check swing that dropped fair before a double steal of second and home from Vaughn and Griggs, respectively, gave the Panthers a 4-3 advantage. Vaughn added an insurance run off a bunt from Shelby Frazier to go up 5-3 after five innings.
Pittman held the Hawks scoreless for the final four frames to secure her 11th complete game and 10th win of the season.
Pitt 0, Minnesota 8
The Panthers used two hits to load the bases in the first inning, but the Gophers worked their way out of the jam to keep Pitt from scoring.
Minnesota scored two runs in the bottom of the first and added another run off a solo home run in the third to take a 3-0 lead after three complete innings. The Gophers made it 8-0 after scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth on two doubles and a Pitt fielding error.
Sydney Schwartz held the Panthers to just one hit over the final four frames to secure her second shutout victory of the weekend.

The Panthers close out the regular season with four games at Vartabedian Field. Pitt will face Robert Morris on Tuesday (ACCN – 6 p.m.) and look to secure a bid to the ACC Championship with a three-game series against Louisville, beginning Thursday at 6 p.m.
