MINNEAPOLIS – The Pitt softball team dropped to Minnesota, 9-0, in five innings at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium, Friday night. The Panthers were unable to overcome the Gophers pitching after being held to just three hits and leaving five runners stranded.
Pitt looked to score early as the first four Panther batters reached base. The Gophers were able to get the lead runner out at second base for the first two outs before a wild pitch put two runners in scoring position. Amanda Ramirez battled in an 11 pitch at-bat, but Sydney Schwartz got the Gophers out of the jam and retired Ramirez on a strikeout to keep the game scoreless after the first.
Kyra Pittman retired the side in the bottom of the first inning, using just nine pitches to keep the game scoreless after the opening inning. The Gophers scored the first run of the game with solo home run to left field for a 1-0 lead after the second inning.
The Gophers worked their way out of another jam as the Panthers got in scoring position with two outs in the top of the third. Minnesota came alive in the third inning and scored five runs off a Pitt error, a double, and a home run.
Minnesota carried the momentum into the next inning to load the bases with two outs. Nani Valencia hit a bases-clearing double to center field to take a 9-0 lead in the fourth. Schwartz retired three of four batters faced in the top of the fifth to secure the run-rule victory.
