Panthers Drop Game One to Blue Devils

DURHAM, NC - The Panthers (18-17, 5-11) lost game one of their series to the Duke Blue Devils on Thursday evening, 9-1.
Six Panthers collected hits in the series opener. Luke Cantwell hit his team-leading 17th double of the season in the eighth inning. In his second start of the year, Anthony LaSala had a single in his first at-bat on Thursday. In a pinch-hitting role, Sebastian Pisacreta singled to left in the top of the ninth inning. AJ Nessler, David Pedanou and Derrick Tarpley Jr. all singled as well.
Antonio Doganiero, Matt Porter and Kayden Faulcon all worked scoreless innings in relief on Thursday night. Doganiero, a freshman, struck out one over 1.2 scoreless frames. Faulcon allowed just one base runner in his 1.1 innings while he struck out two Blue Devils.
Senior right hander Kyle Demi made the first start of his career and struck out the side in the bottom of the first inning.
Duke tacked on four runs in the bottom of the second on a RBI single and a three-run home run. They led 4-0 through the first four innings.
The Panthers threatened in the top of the third, loading the bases with two outs. Pitt's Anthony LaSala collected his first base hit of the year on a single to left in his first at-bat of the game. Luke Cantwell and Caden Dulin each drew walks and the bases were loaded for Pitt's three-hole hitter, Jayden Melendez who flew out to shallow left field to end the inning.
The Blue Devils added runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to take a 9-0 lead in the series opener.
Pitt got a run in the top of the ninth inning after Sebastian Pisacreta led off with a pinch-hit single to left. After coming in as defensive replacement, freshman Julian Irizarry worked a walk. Derrick Tarpley Jr. would reach on a hit-by-pitch and the Panthers loaded the bases with one out. Anthony LaSala drove in Pisacreta on an RBI fielder's choice to bring home Pitt's first run of the weekend. The Panthers lost game one to the Blue Devils, 9-1.
