CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Pitt softball team scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning en route to its 6-2 extra inning victory over Boston College in the series finale at Harrington Athletics Village, Sunday afternoon. The Panthers finished the day with six runs and nine hits as the Pitt pitchers combined to hold the Eagles to two runs and two hits.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Bekah Duck allowed a home run with four strikeouts and six walks in her first start since February 14. Right-handed pitcher Kyra Pittman earned the win after retiring the last nine Eagle batters en route to the victory. Pittman entered with two outs in the third inning and allowed one earned run, one hit, three strikeouts and three walks in 5.1 innings of work.
Pitt was strong offensively as four Panthers recorded multi-hit efforts: Kylie Griggs (2-for-4), Ahmari Braden (2-for-4), Desirae Martinez (2-for-4), and Ana Hernandez (2-for-4).
The Panthers attached early as Braden hit double to left field and scored on a single up the middle from Camryn Murphy to take an early 1-0 lead after the opening inning.
The Eagles had an opportunity to answer in the bottom of the first as they loaded the bases after drawing three walks. Boston College couldn't convert any runs as the inning ended on a fly out to right center. Duck bounced back by striking out four over the next two frames to keep the Panthers in the lead.
Boston College tied the game with a solo home run from Jordan Stephens in the bottom of the third to force a Panther pitching change. Pittman entered the circle and struck out the first batter faced to keep the game tied 1-1 heading into the fourth inning. Pittman retired the first four batters faced, including striking out two to help Pitt take the lead in the fourth inning.
Tieley Vaughn drew a walk and eventually scored on a Hernandez single to left center field to give Pitt the 2-1 edge after the fourth inning. Boston College tied the game again after Pittman issued a bases loaded walk to make the score 2-2 with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.
The Panthers and Eagles were each scoreless through the next two frames to keep the game tied after seven complete innings. Griggs and Braden started off the eighth with back-to-back singles to get two runners on and force a Boston College pitching change.
The Panthers scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 6-2 lead. Griggs scored the go-ahead run after Vaughn put the ball in play and reached first on a fielder's choice. Martinez hit a double to bring in another run, followed by Hernandez hitting a two-run single to put the Panthers up 6-2.
