Pitt Drops Midweek Contest to RMU

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt softball team dropped a midweek match up to Robert Morris, 7-1, Tuesday evening at Vartabedian Field. The Panthers were held to one run and three hits as the Colonials scored seven runs on eight hits.

Ahmari Braden beat out the throw from the shortstop for an infield single in the first inning as the Panthers were held without a hit through the next four frames. Kylie Griggs got the Panthers on the board with a solo home run to left center field in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Pitt and RMU were scoreless through the first frame, but the Colonials struck first with a solo home run from Sequoia Dunlap that made it just over the outfield wall in the left center to take a 1-0 lead.

Kyra Pittman and Madison DeVault exchanged 1-2-3 innings in the third before RMU hit another home run in the top of the fourth inning for a 2-0 lead. Mary Brant hit a fly ball to center field that bounced off Griggs' glove and went over the outfield wall. RMU added another run in the top of the fourth off a Pitt fielding error to extend the lead 3-0.

Dunlap hit her second homer of the day, a three-run homer to right center field, for a 6-0 lead after six innings. Griggs got the Panthers on the board with a solo home run to left center field to make the score 6-1 heading into the final inning.

RMU started the top of the seventh with three straight singles to score another run, 7-1. Kaitlyn Brannstrom drew a leadoff walk and Tieley Vaughn hit a single to get two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh, but Pitt wasn't able to score any more runs as the game ended on a diving catch from the RMU second baseman.
