CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Pitt softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to open the series against Boston College at Harrington Athletics Village, Friday afternoon. The Panthers battled but could not overcome the late offensive sparks from the Eagles, dropping both games on walk off singles.
Game One – Pitt 3, Boston College 4
Kyra Pittman and Bailey Kendziorski opened the series with a pitcher's duel as both went scoreless in the opening two frames. Pittman went 1-2-3 in the first two innings as Kendziorski gave up one hit and struck out four in that span.
Pitt got a pair of hits off Kendziorski in the third inning as Ahmari Braden beat out the throw to get a bunt single and have the Panthers on the corners and have a run in scoring position for the first time. Kaitlyn Brannstrom got her second hit of the afternoon, a single to right field, to bring in the first run of the game. Tieley Vaughn followed in the next at-bat with a double to right center to plate another run and give the Panthers a 2-0 lead in the third.
The Eagles added a run in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI triple from Kali Case as the inning ended on a Camryn Murphy diving catch to save the game-tying run from scoring.
Pitt added one more run in the top of the fifth inning as Braden avoided the tag at home off a Vaughn single to take a 3-1 lead. The Eagles answered in the bottom of the fifth inning with a Hannah Slike two-run double to tie the game 3-3 heading into the sixth inning.
Kendziorski and Pittman exchanged quick 1-2-3 innings in the sixth to keep the game tied at 3-3 heading into the seventh. KK Esparza hit a lead off single in the seventh and moved into scoring position with a sac bunt from Kylie Griggs, but the Panthers weren't able to capitalize and score a run.
Boston College ended the game on a walk off single from Jordan Stephens to put the Eagles up, 4-3 and take the first game of the doubleheader.
Kendziorski earned the win after allowing three earned runs on nine hits with a career-high eight strikeouts, over 7.0 innings. Pittman suffered the loss despite a strong outing in the circle. She allowed four earned runs on 10 hits with a strikeout and issued one walk while producing 15 fly outs.
Game Two – Pitt 5, Boston College 6
The Panthers struck first with three straight hits in the top of the second inning to get a run on the board with no outs. Shelby Frazier drove in the first run with a single through the left side. Amanda "Tuta" Ramirez brought in another run with a single to center field to extend the lead to 2-0 in the top of the third.
The Panthers bats came alive again in the top of the fourth as Frazier led off with a single to set up a Griggs two-run home run for a 4-0 lead. Brannstrom followed with a double and Vaughn reached on a fielding error to put runners on the corners. Vaughn scored one last run in the top of the seventh to extend Pitt's lead 5-2.
Gwen Sparks started in the circle for the second game and shutout the Eagles in the first two frames. Sparks held down the circle, allowing just three hits and one earned run over the first four innings. Sparks carried the momentum into the fifth as she retired the side in the bottom of the fifth with a ground out and back-to-back strikeouts.
The Eagles drew a walk and hit back-to-back singles in the fourth inning to score their first run of the game. Emma Jackson hit a triple in the bottom of the sixth and scored on a sac fly to cut the deficit 4-2 heading into the final inning of play.
Boston College rallied for the win with a four-run seventh inning to walk off the second game of the day. The Eagles hit two singles in the bottom of the seventh to set up a Meghan Schouten three-run homer to tie the game at 5-5.
