PITTSBURGH – Despite a late fifth inning push, the Pitt softball team fell to Georgia Tech, 7-6, Saturday evening at Vartabedian Field.

With the result, Pitt (11-17, 1-7 ACC) and Georgia Tech (18-12, 6-5 ACC) will now play a rubber match to determine the series winner on Sunday evening at 1 p.m.

The Panthers were led by graduate Kaitlyn Brannstrom as she recorded two hits for the second-consecutive game, including a homer in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman pitcher Gwen Sparks had a solid performance on the mound, tallying five strikeouts.

The Panthers faced an early deficit as Georgia Tech put up four runs in the top of the first inning. The Panthers began to climb back in the bottom of the frame, plating two behind a triple and a single from Ahmari Braden and Tieley Vaughan, respectively.

After two scoreless innings, the Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 5-2 in the top of the fourth.

Trailing by three heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Panthers quickly pulled within two behind a Shelby Frazier solo shot to right field. After two of the ensuing three batters ended up on base, Brannstrom blasted a homer to right field, plating three and giving Pitt its first lead of the contest.

Georgia Tech immediately regained the lead in the top of the sixth, taking a 7-6 advantage. The Yellow Jackets never looked back and held on to even the series at one game apiece.
