CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Pitt Lacrosse fought hard after a tough start, but ultimately dropped Saturday's ACC matchup with No. 12 Virginia by a score of 16-12.
The Panthers won two out of six draw controls in the first, but couldn't take advantage of any of those offensive opportunities as the Cavaliers took a 5-0 lead in the opening quarter of play.
Even with Virginia winning the draw control battle again in the second, Pitt made defensive stops and capitalized on offense, outscoring the No. 12 team 6-3 heading into the halftime break. Paige Telatovich scored her first two goals of her sophomore campaign, while Jenna Hendrickson and Sydney Naylor added one each and Kaitlyn Giandonato contributed two scores.
After halftime, Virginia established control of the contest again outscoring Pitt 5-3. Avery Moon and Hendrickson scored to keep the visitors close and Giandonato netted her third for a hat trick, the fourth time this season she has scored at least three.
In the fourth, Pitt was unable to regain their footing as the Cavaliers got out to a fast start scoring the first three of the period. For the second time in the conference clash, Pitt fought back and scored three unanswered goals. All three in the run came from Hendrickson, numbers three, four and five on the day. The comeback stopped there as the game ended in a four-goal deficit.
Aidan Carr picked up six draw controls to lead the Panthers and goalie Molly Cain made 11 saves to slow down the Cavalier attack. The Panthers will continue the road swing, as they travel across the state for a non-conference game with the Temple Owls on Tuesday. First draw is set for 3 PM.
