
Pitt Falls to Syracuse, 83-65

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Pitt women's basketball team fell to Syracuse, 83-65, Thursday evening at the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.
The Panthers (12-18, 4-13 ACC) outscored Syracuse (11-17, 5-12 ACC), 38-35, in the second and third quarters but were unable to overcome the Orange shooting 54 percent from the field as a unit.
Individually, graduate center Khadija Faye notched her ACC-leading 16th double-double of the season, while logging her seventh-straight with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Senior forward MaKayla Elmore registered 10 points and seven boards, while junior guard Marley Washenitz tallied 10 points and six assists.
Redshirt sophomore guard Mikayla Johnson joined Faye, Elmore and Washenitz in double-figures with 11 points.
As a team, Pitt shot 14-of-16 from the free throw line, highlighted by Faye's 7-of-7 performance from the stripe. Additionally, the Panthers recorded 14 assists on 23 made baskets (60.8 percent).
How It Happened
Syracuse jumped out to a 9-2 lead, holding Pitt to 1-of-7 shooting from the field over the first five minutes of action. After a pair of Washenitz free throws, Syracuse scored five unanswered to take a 10-point lead at 14-4. The two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the period as Syracuse led, 19-10, after 10 minutes of play.
The Orange outscored Pitt, 17-6, to start the second quarter – going up, 36-16, at the 4:59 mark. The Panthers then went on a dominant 13-0 run to pull within seven with less than one minute remaining in the first half. During the Panthers' burst, Elmore logged five points – including a key triple with 56 seconds left in frame.
Pitt faced a 38-29 deficit at the halftime break. Individually, Faye led the way with 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field, to go along with four boards.
Syracuse outscored Pitt, 8-5, over the first four minutes of the third period, before an 8-4 Panther burst cut Pitt's deficit to eight. After a pair of Syracuse free throws, Elmore and Johnson drilled consecutive jumpers to close the third quarter as Pitt trailed, 54-48, entering the final period.
The Panthers continued to battle down the stretch, but hot shooting from Syracuse proved to be the difference as Pitt ultimately fell, 83-65.
