
Panthers Shutout Quinnipiac, Split Second Day of SpaceU Classic

ORLANDO – Kyra Pittman pitched her second complete-game shutout of the season as the Panthers split the second day of the SpaceU Classic at the UCF Softball Complex, Friday afternoon. Pitt defeated Quinnipiac, 1-0, but dropped to Columbia, 9-7.

The Panthers and Bobcats battled in a pitcher's duel as both teams were scoreless through the first inning. Camryn Murphy scored the lone run of the game off a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the second inning.
Kyra Pittman (3-2) anchored the Panthers in the circle, recording her second complete game shutout of the season. Pittman allowed four hits with a career-high six strikeouts while issuing just one walk in 27 batters faced.
The Cumberland, Md. native retired the side in three of the final four frames, allowing just one base runner in that span. Pittman retired the three batters in the top of the seventh inning, ending the game on a strikeout to secure the win.
Sydney Horan was saddled with the loss, allowing a home run with four strikeouts and issuing one walk in 6.0 innings.
Columbia 9, Pitt 7
Columbia had a hot start to the game, scoring five runs in the top of the first innings. The rally began with a two-run homer down the left field line. The Lions scored three more runs off a single, a walk, and a hit by pitch to take a commanding 5-0 lead.
Kylie Griggs got the Panthers on the board with her first home run of the season, a solo homer to left center field to lead off the bottom of the first. Saleyna Daniel added another run for the Panthers with a sacrifice fly to right field to make the score 5-2 at the end of the first inning.
The Lions scored two more runs in the next inning as the Panthers responded by scoring three runs off a double from Tieley Vaughn to make it a two-run game, 7-5, after two complete innings.
The Panthers and Lions combined for 12 runs and nine hits over the opening two frames, while each being limited to two runs over the remaining five innings. Columbia recorded seven runs and six hits in the first two frames, but the Panthers' pitchers combined to hold the Lions to two runs and four hits through the remaining five innings.
Pitt and Columbia were scoreless through the third inning, and each exchanged a run in the fourth. Griggs reached first and advanced to second on a throwing error from the third baseman. She advanced to third and scored on two wild pitches to make the score 8-6 after four complete innings.
Camryn Murphy hit a single through the left side and Desirae Martinez reached on a fielder's choice that advanced Murphy to second. Ana Hernandez followed with another single to score Murphy and make it a one-run game, 8-7, in the bottom of the fifth. The Lions added their final run in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI single to the shortstop.
Charlotte Laidler earned the win for Columbia as Kyra Pittman was saddled with the loss after pitching 0.2 innings.
UP NEXT
Pitt will play another doubleheader tomorrow to conclude the SpaceU Classic in Orlando, Fla. The Panthers will face off against Quinnipiac (9 a.m.) and FGCU (11:30 a.m.).
